HOOD RIVER AND MOUNT HOOD
Hood River is located between Mount Hood and the Columbia River in the breath-taking Columbia River Gorge. The Gorge is filled with spectacular visions of mountains, lush landscape and beautiful waterfalls. Hood River is the wind surfing capital of the world. There are biking trails, hiking, snow skiing and wind surfing all within 30 minutes of Hood River. It’s easy to see why people have called Hood River their home.
Mount Hood (45.4N, 121.7W) is the tallest mountain in Oregon (11,237 feet) and is popular with skiers, hikers, and climbers. Located 45 miles east-southeast of Portland, Oregon, Mount Hood is a stratovolcano made of lava flows, domes, and volcaniclastic deposits. The last 15,000 years, the volcano has had four eruptive periods. During the most recent eruptive period, 180-250 years ago, lava domes collapsed and produced numerous pyroclastic flows and lahars, which buried the southwest flank of the mountain. Crater Rock, a prominent rocky pinnacle just below the summit, is the most recent lava dome. Despite its past, Mount Hood is still a beauty in the horizon and many consider themselves lucky to be in its presence.
